Call for Papers : AASSC Conference, Western University, London, ON, Canada June 1–4, 2020

The thirty-ninth annual meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC) will be held at Western University from Monday, June 1–Thursday, June 4, 2020 in conjunction with the meetings of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences / Fédération Canadienne des Sciences Humaines.

The AASSC invites papers of 20 minutes duration, to be followed by an additional 10 minutes of discussion time. Papers may be given in English or French on a Scandinavian / Nordic related topic in any discipline, including Sami, Finnish, Greenlandic, Faroese, and Icelandic.

As stated on the Congress website, the 2020 overall theme is Bridging Divides: “The theme emphasizes that Congress assembles scholars, artists and members of the general public who engage with the world from differing viewpoints, offering a forum to share perspectives, to listen deeply and critically, and to respond. Also, it’s an invitation for people to listen to the land and the water. It brings a focus on interdisciplinarity (bridging disciplinary divides) and on internationalization (bridging national divides). At the same time, it highlights our disciplines’ engagement in bringing people together to build resilience in the face of forces that tear them apart (bridging political and ideological divides) and in overcoming the divisiveness of colonialism while promoting reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and settler populations.”

AASSC encourages panels (3 participants) that deal with the overall theme as expressed by the Federation, in a Scandinavian/Nordic context. However, papers are NOT limited to these themes/angles, and we welcome all contributions within Scandinavian Studies. Thus, proposals for panels on other themes within Scandinavian / Nordic Studies are also invited, as are proposals for interdisciplinary colloquia or special sessions on the level of the overall Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Let the AASSC Program Committee Chair know if you wish your panel to be a part of the overall Congress and/or an interdisciplinary session in collaboration with another association.

There are two deadlines again this year. If you must hand in your application for funding to your institution already this fall, you may submit your proposal by October 18, 2019, and the Program Committee will give you an answer by the end of October. In all other cases, the deadline for submission of proposals for panels/abstracts is January 15, 2020, through e-mail only.

Submissions should include the title of the paper, an abstract (150–250 words), the author’s name and affiliation, a very brief bio, and updated contact information.

Please email your submission to the Chair of the AASSC Program Committee at: cwe1@hi.is

In memory of Professor Chris Hale, one of the founding members of the AASSC who passed away earlier this year, and in recognition of his many contributions to the society, a conference paper that corresponds with Chris’ research interests will be selected by the Program Committee and introduced during the conference as the Honorary Chris Hale Paper.
